Prologue (Unimagined: Mothering Beyond the Flesh)
L’artista, aprofitant la seva posició com a mare de criatures petites que busca la utopia en un jardí al desert, reflexiona sobre la seva pròpia infància en el paisatge postindustrial del nord d’Anglaterra, un lloc de pèrdua i desconnexió de la natura que l’ha impulsada a cercar una llar en indrets salvatges arreu del món.
En viure en aquest jardí durant tres mesos, el paisatge utòpic de Lanzarote es fa miques ràpidament. La il·lusió és substituïda per la sintonització amb les espècies endèmiques de plantes del jardí i les lliçons que ens han d’ensenyar sobre l’Antropocè i la nostra separació de la natura a través d’un relat cultural compartit situat en la història colonial britànica i espanyola.
The artist, using her position as a mother of young children seeking utopia in a garden in the desert, reflects upon her own childhood in the post-industrial landscape of northern England, a site of loss and disconnection from nature, that has driven her to search for a home in wild places around the world.
By living in this garden for three months, the utopian landscape of Lanzarote quickly shatters. The illusion is replaced by attuning to the endemic species of plants in the garden, and the lessons they have to teach us about the Anthropocene and our separation from nature through a shared cultural narrative set in British and Spanish colonial history.
